July opens Japan's summer fireworks (hanabi) season. Displays start in the second half of the month as the rainy season lifts, and the biggest Tokyo-area events — Sumida River, Katsushika, Edogawa — fall on the last weekends. It is hot and humid, but the crowds are not yet at their August peak.
