Where to Stay for Tsuchiura All Japan Fireworks Competition 2026

Last updated: July 12, 2026

Tsuchiura is one of Japan's big three fireworks competitions, held unusually late in the season (early November), 70 minutes from Tokyo. Most spectators day-trip from the capital — but the small stock of hotels near the venue rewards anyone who books absurdly early.

Tsuchiura All Japan Fireworks Competition takes place on November 7, 2026 (Sat) — see the full festival guide for tickets, viewing spots and access.

How early do rooms go? Hotels around Tsuchiura Station fill early every year — some take bookings from about a year out, and there is no single on-sale date: the official FAQ tells you to ask each property directly, and local hotels announce their own festival packages individually. If you're not watching in spring, you've probably missed the station-front hotels.

Where to Stay

Tsuchiura (Best if you can get it)

Station-front hotels put you a walk away from the venue and — more valuably — let you skip the post-show crush back to Tokyo. Inventory is small; watch individual hotels' festival-plan announcements from spring and grab cancellations right after release dates or just before cancellation-fee deadlines.
Venue is about 2.5 km from JR Tsuchiura Station (30-minute walk or shuttle).

Tsukuba (The realistic option)

The neighboring science city has a deeper stock of business hotels and is the standard recommendation once Tsuchiura fills.
30–50 minutes to the venue area by bus or taxi from Tsukuba's hotel district.

Mito (The realistic option)

Further out but plentiful and cheap — budget rooms survive here long after Tsuchiura is gone.
JR Joban Line to Tsuchiura: about 25 minutes by limited express, 40 by local.

Tokyo (Ueno side) (Day-trip base)

If you're day-tripping, base yourself near the Joban Line's Tokyo end — Ueno or nearby — so the late return is one seat, not three transfers.
Limited express Hitachi/Tokiwa from Ueno to Tsuchiura in about 45 minutes (locals about 70).

Can you do it as a day trip?

Yes — Tokyo day-trippers are the majority. Budget real time for the exit though: the 2.5 km from the venue back to Tsuchiura Station moves at crowd speed (an hour or more), and the station then meters entry, so boarding can take another 60–90 minutes. Buy or load your return fare on arrival, and consider letting the first wave clear before you start walking.
