Gifu Nagaragawa Fireworks Festival 2026
Last updated: July 18, 2026. All facts below are compiled from official festival, city and tourism association websites (linked at the end of this page).
Two separate large fireworks festivals were long held on this stretch of the Nagara River, one sponsored by the Chunichi Shimbun and one by the Gifu Shimbun newspapers. After both were suspended, they were merged and relaunched in 2023 as a single event, the Gifu Nagaragawa Fireworks Festival, run by an executive committee - the Gifu City tourism bureau describes it as the unified successor that resumed after a four-year gap. The August 8, 2026 event is the 4th edition of the merged festival.

Highlights
- A roughly 70-minute show (19:30-20:40) launched from sandbars in the middle of the Nagara River, with spectators lining the north bank between Nagara Bridge and Kinka Bridge.
- Mt. Kinka rises directly beside the upstream end of the venue with Gifu Castle on its summit, giving the fireworks a castle-and-mountain backdrop rare among big-city displays.
- The festival carries the combined legacy of Gifu's two famous newspaper-sponsored Nagara River fireworks festivals, making it one of the Tokai region's major summer displays.
- An unusually wide range of 18 seat types, from 4,000 yen unreserved embankment seating to front-row reclining seats and a dedicated tripod-allowed area for photographers.
Where to Watch
Reserved seats at the Kinka Bridge Gate (north bank) (Paid seating)
The main reserved-seat block of the paid 'cheering seat' (oen-seki) area on the north bank between Kinka Bridge and Nagara Bridge. It contains front-row reclining seats, front-row and second-row-onward S/A seats, B seats, box seats for up to 4 people, a tripod-allowed photography area, and levee-road seats. Entry is through the Kinka Bridge Gate with a paid ticket.
Take the dedicated shuttle bus bound for the Kinka Bridge area from stops 14-15 in front of JR Gifu Station (shuttles run from 16:00; use regular route buses before that).
Group, table, picnic and stair seats at the Ukawacho Gate (Paid seating)
The middle section of the paid riverbank area, entered through the Ukawacho Gate. It holds group seats (up to 6 people), picnic seats (up to 4), table seats (up to 3) and stepped 'stair' seats on the embankment.
Take the shuttle bus bound for the Nagara Bridge area from the Meitetsu Gifu Station bus stop, or walk from the Kinka Bridge shuttle drop-off.
Unreserved seats at the Nagara Bridge Gate (Paid seating)
The cheapest ticketed option (4,000 yen per person in 2026): unreserved free-seating within a ticketed zone at the upstream end of the venue, entered through the Nagara Bridge Gate. Holders of the early-entry ticket (5,000 yen) may enter only through this gate. Gates open at 16:00 for early-entry ticket holders and 17:00 for general admission.
Take the shuttle bus bound for the Nagara Bridge area from the Meitetsu Gifu Station bus stop. This end of the venue is next to Gifu Park and the Gifu Castle ropeway.
Free viewing areas near Chusetsu Bridge (Free)
The official traffic-regulation map marks free viewing areas (muryo kanran area) on both banks of the river downstream of the paid zone, toward Chusetsu Bridge. No ticket is needed, but space is first-come and the organizers do not guarantee visibility from spots outside the venue, so arrive well before the 19:30 start.
From JR Gifu Station, take the Kinka Bridge shuttle from stops 14-15 or a regular route bus toward Chusetsu Bridge from stops 8-9. The organizers note that the Nagara Bridge shuttle leaves you a long detour from the free areas.
How to Buy Tickets
For 2026, general first-come sales run July 8 to August 8, 2026 online via Ticket PIA and at Seven-Eleven in-store kiosks (a Gifu residents' lottery ran May 16-June 12, and a pre-sale for JR Central EX members ran June 15-July 5). Eighteen seat types are sold, from 4,000 yen unreserved seats to a 90,000 yen premium table for up to 6 people. Ticket resale is prohibited. The purchase process is in Japanese only.

- English purchase: Japanese only (consider a proxy service or asking your hotel)
Getting There
From Nagoya, take the JR Tokaido Line to Gifu Station (about 20 minutes by rapid train) or the Meitetsu line to Meitetsu Gifu Station (about 30 minutes); the two stations are a few minutes' walk apart. The riverbank venue is north of the stations, and on festival day dedicated shuttle buses run from 16:00: from JR Gifu Station stops 14-15 to the Kinka Bridge area (reserved seats and the free areas) and from the Meitetsu Gifu Station stop to the Nagara Bridge area (unreserved and group seats). Before 16:00, use regular route buses. A separate paid shuttle (500 yen one way, cash only, 15:00-17:00) runs from temporary parking at the Gifu Prefectural Government building, and advance-reserved parking is offered there; there is no parking at the venue itself and bicycles are banned in and around it. A day trip from Nagoya is realistic - the show ends around 20:40 and return shuttles run until 22:00 - but budget generous time for the bus queue back to the station and confirm the evening's last JR and Meitetsu departures toward Nagoya in advance.
Crowd & Timing Tips
- About 120,000 visitors are expected, and roads around the riverbank are closed to traffic in stages from roughly 13:00 until as late as midnight; there is no venue parking and bicycles cannot be brought into or around the venue.
- The organizers warn that bus queues and traffic jams can make you miss the 19:30 start even if you arrive at the station in good time - aim to be on a shuttle well before 18:00.
- For the return trip there is only one bus boarding point, at Gifu City Hall (about a 10-minute walk from Kinka Bridge, 30 minutes from Nagara Bridge); buses run from about 20:30 with the last departure at 22:00, and you may not get aboard even before the last bus if queues are long.
- Some riverside streets near the launch area are closed to pedestrians as well (roughly 14:00-23:00), so follow the marked gate routes rather than shortcuts along the levee.
- Postponement or cancellation decisions are announced only at fixed times (on the day at 9:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 17:00) and on-the-day updates are posted to the festival's official Facebook page, not the website.
Weather Policy
The festival goes ahead in light rain. In the event of severe weather or flooding of the Nagara River it will be postponed to Saturday, August 22, 2026; if it cannot be held on that date either, it is cancelled with no second postponement. Go/no-go announcements are made at fixed times (10:00 and 15:00 on the two days before, and 9:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 17:00 on the day), with same-day updates posted on the festival's official Facebook page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What time do the fireworks start and end?
The show runs from about 19:30 to 20:40 on Saturday, August 8, 2026. Gates to the paid seating area open at 16:00 for early-entry ticket holders and 17:00 for general ticket holders.
Can I watch for free?
Yes. The official venue map marks free viewing areas on both banks downstream of the paid zone, toward Chusetsu Bridge. They are unticketed and first-come, and the organizers do not guarantee visibility from locations outside the venue, so arrive early. The main embankment between Kinka Bridge and Nagara Bridge is a paid, ticketed area.
How do I get there from Nagoya?
Take the JR Tokaido Line to Gifu Station (about 20 minutes by rapid train) or Meitetsu to Meitetsu Gifu Station (about 30 minutes). From either station, board the festival shuttle buses that run from 16:00 - JR Gifu Station stops 14-15 for the Kinka Bridge area, the Meitetsu Gifu stop for the Nagara Bridge area - or a regular route bus earlier in the day.
Can I buy tickets in English?
No English-language sales channel is offered. Tickets for 2026 are sold July 8-August 8 through Ticket PIA online and Seven-Eleven in-store kiosks, both in Japanese only. Prices start at 4,000 yen for unreserved seats. Resale is prohibited, so avoid secondary-market listings.
Can I combine the fireworks with a visit to Gifu Castle?
Yes. Gifu Park and the ropeway up Mt. Kinka to Gifu Castle sit right beside the upstream (Nagara Bridge) end of the venue, so a daytime castle visit followed by the evening fireworks is a natural plan. Note that roads around the riverbank close progressively from early afternoon, so move on foot or by bus once you are in the area.
Does the famous Nagara River cormorant fishing run on fireworks night?
Not in the usual form. Regular shared cormorant-fishing (ukai) viewing boats do not operate on the night of the fireworks - only pre-arranged charter boats run, at non-standard fares. If seeing ukai is part of your plan, stay a second night: the summer viewing season continues through September on this same stretch of river.
