Where to See the Autumn Leaves
Kyoko-chi Mirror Pond (Paid)
The main viewing point where the golden pavilion and surrounding autumn maples mirror perfectly on the still water.
Just inside the temple entrance along the main viewing path.
Sekkatei Teahouse Path (Paid)
The upper garden path past the Sekkatei teahouse, lined with maples on the way to the exit.
Follow the one-way strolling route uphill from the pavilion.
Getting There
From Kyoto Station take city bus 205 (or bus 12/59/M1) to the Kinkakuji-michi stop, about a 5-minute walk from there; roughly 40 minutes total.
Crowd & Timing Tips
- Arrive right at the 9:00 opening to beat tour groups on the narrow one-way path
- Weekday mornings are noticeably calmer than autumn weekends
About Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)
Built as a retirement villa for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397 and later converted into a Zen temple, it is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
