Where to See the Autumn Leaves
Niomon gate and stone-step approach (Paid)
The thatched-roof Niomon gate opens onto a maple-canopied stone stairway that is the temple's signature autumn scene.
Just inside the temple entrance; single admission covers the grounds.
Tahoto pagoda and hillside grounds (Paid)
A short climb reaches the two-storied pagoda and upper grounds, with maples framing a view out over Sagano and the city.
Follow the path uphill from the main hall within the temple grounds.
Getting There
From Kyoto Station take the JR Sagano (Sanin) Line to Saga-Arashiyama Station (about 15 min), then walk ~15 minutes; or take the Randen (Keifuku) Arashiyama Line to Arashiyama Station and walk ~20 minutes. It lies north of Tenryu-ji in the Sagano hills.
Crowd & Timing Tips
- Come right at the 9:00 opening for the maple stone steps before tour groups arrive
- It is less crowded than Tenryu-ji, but the narrow uphill paths still bottleneck at peak weekends
About Jojakko-ji Temple
Founded in the Keicho era (1596-1614) by the Nichiren-sect priest Nisshin on the slope of Mt. Ogura, long celebrated in poetry.
